Purpose of the Role
The E&I Principal Designer plays a vital role in concept development, FEED, and tendering processes, ensuring high-quality designs for electrical and instrumentation (E&I) systems in offshore projects, including FPSOs, process plants, and marine facilities. The role focuses on developing layout concepts, optimizing 3D modeling strategies, and preparing material take-offs (MTOs) to support early-phase engineering decisions and tender submissions.
Key Responsibilities
- Subcontractor Management: Oversee and coordinate engineering subcontractors, ensuring compliance with project specifications, quality standards, and timelines.
- Design Development: Lead conceptual design efforts for E&I systems during Pre-FEED and FEED phases, developing layout strategies and integration plans for optimal functionality.
- Tendering & Cost Estimation: Provide technical expertise in tendering activities by preparing design packages, layout drawings, and material estimates to enhance bid proposals.
- Layout Optimization: Develop and maintain E&I layout drawings, including cable routing plans, equipment locations, and equipment arrangements. Optimize 3D modeling for efficient space utilization and constructability in offshore environments.
- Material Take-Off (MTO) & Procurement Support: Perform MTO calculations to support cost estimation and procurement strategies, ensuring material selection aligns with project specifications and budget considerations.
- Compliance & Standardization: Ensure all design deliverables comply with international standards (IEC, IEEE, API, ISO) and project-specific requirements. Collaborate with engineers to translate technical specifications into practical, cost-effective designs for tender submissions.
- Design Review & System Integration: Conduct design reviews and clash detection to ensure seamless integration of E&I systems within FPSO and offshore facility concepts. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams to refine cable routing, equipment placement, and interface designs during early-phase engineering.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
- 12+ years of experience in E&I design for offshore, oil & gas, or industrial projects.
- Extensive hands-on experience with AutoCAD, SmartPlant Electrical, SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), AVEVA E&I, or similar tools.
- Strong knowledge of layout optimization, material take-offs, and 3D modeling techniques.
- Experience in Pre-FEED, FEED, and tendering for offshore E&I systems.
- Familiarity with FPSOs, process facilities, marine systems, and offshore environments.
- Background in hazardous area classification and Ex-rated equipment specifications.
- Ability to work closely with engineers, project managers, and procurement teams to refine design strategies.
Behavioral Attributes
- Attention to Detail: Ensures accuracy in drawings, schematics, and 3D models for early-phase design work.
- Problem-Solving: Strong ability to troubleshoot design challenges and develop cost-effective layout solutions.
- Collaboration: Works effectively with engineers, drafters, and project teams to develop competitive tender designs.
- Adaptability: Thrives in fast-paced tender and FEED environments, adjusting designs based on evolving project needs.
