Position Overview
The Principal Material and Corrosion Protection Engineer is a senior technical role responsible for leading the development and integration of material selection and corrosion protection strategies in offshore energy projects.
The role involves ensuring that materials, coatings, and corrosion systems are fit for purpose and aligned with project requirements, international codes, and industry best practices. This position plays a key role throughout project phases—from concept to execution—working closely with multi-discipline teams, vendors, and clients.
The candidate should have a strong background in Material and corrosion protections specific to offshore engineering and be proficient in coordinating with various engineering teams to manage assigned scope.
Travel to Europe, Asia, or other locations may be required depending on project needs.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide expert guidance on material selection and corrosion protection systems from the early design stage through to detailed engineering.
- Develop and review specifications, data sheets, material selection reports, P&IDs, painting/coating requirements, insulation specs, and cathodic protection strategies.
- Lead the preparation and review of Engineering and procurement documents including RFQs, technical bid evaluations, and vendor data for materials and protective systems.
- Interface with classification societies, clients, and internal teams to ensure material and corrosion systems comply with project codes and regulatory requirements.
- Assess technical risks linked to material selection and propose mitigation strategies during design and procurement.
- Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, constructability checks, and project planning sessions to ensure robust and practical engineering outcomes.
- Coordinate with procurement, fabrication, construction, and commissioning teams to align material and corrosion protection solutions with project delivery plans.
- Guide inspection, testing, and qualification of corrosion protection systems and material batches, ensuring traceability and compliance.
- Provide technical support to resolve field issues during engineering phases, construction, installation, and start-up, operation.
- Act as a mentor to junior engineers and provide technical quality checks and coaching.
- Support continuous improvement by promoting lessons learned, up-to-date technologies, and standardization across projects.
- Track and document engineering decisions, deviations, and material change controls throughout project lifecycle.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Metallurgy, Mechanical Engineering, or a related experience.
- Minimum 15 years of experience in material selection and corrosion engineering, preferably in the offshore oil & gas or energy sector.
- Solid understanding of corrosion mechanisms, coating systems, cathodic protection, insulation systems, and material performance in marine environments.
- Solid experience in EPCI projects.
- Familiar with ISO, NORSOK, DNV, ASTM, NACE, and other relevant standards for materials and corrosion protection.
- Experience managing package engineering related to materials or corrosion-critical equipment/components.
- Proven track record of handling complex engineering tasks independently and delivering technical solutions in fast-paced project environments.
- Skilled in interpreting and generating engineering documents including MTOs, corrosion control philosophies, and material selection diagrams.
- Strong ability to coordinate across disciplines and with external vendors, labs, and certifying authorities.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Proficient in written and verbal communication, with the ability to clearly present complex technical topics.
- Proactive, team player with leadership capability and the drive to deliver high-quality results under tight timelines.
- Willingness to travel for project reviews, vendor inspections, or site support as needed.
- Fluent in English.
