Position Overview:

 

The Principal Mechanical Engineer – Static Equipment is a senior technical authority responsible for leading the design and engineering of static mechanical equipment for offshore facilities, particularly FPSO and FLNG topsides. This role covers the full project lifecycle—from concept and pre-FEED through detailed design and commissioning. The Principal Mechanical Engineer will act as the focal point for mechanical static equipment, guide multidisciplinary teams, interface with vendors and clients, and ensure compliance with international codes and quality standards. This role may require frequent travel to the US, Europe and/or Asia.

 

The ideal candidate for the position will have a strong background in the Offshore Oil & Gas Industry, be an expert in the field of Static Equipment and provide a strategic focus in the Topsides Concept Layout for Conceptual/pre-FEED/FEED/EPC(I) projects being bid in the offshore area. This will include FPSO or FLNG facilities as well as other Fixed and Floating platforms/facilities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

Engineering & Design

 

  • Lead the selection, design, and specification of static mechanical equipment including pressure vessels, tanks, and heat exchangers for offshore topside modules.
  • Prepare, maintain and review technical deliverables such as Equipment List, Specifications, Datasheets, RFQs, and Technical Bid Evaluations.
  • Conduct material selection studies and ensure designs comply with applicable codes (ASME, API, DNV, etc.).
  • Support the development of topsides layouts and ensure optimal equipment arrangement in early design phases.

 

Vendor & Procurement Support

 

  • Prepare Material Requisitions for the RFQ’s
  • Evaluate vendor proposals, clarify technical aspects, and attend vendor meetings.
  • Review and approve vendor documents and engineering drawings.
  • Conduct vendor audits and manufacturing facility visits to verify capability, testing, and compliance.

 

Project Execution & Support

 

  • Support execution of TENDER, CONCEPT, FEED, EPC(I), and commissioning phases for FPSO / FLNG and Fixed Platforms.
  • Participate in engineering risk assessments, design reviews, and interface coordination.
  • Resolve technical issues arising during fabrication, integration, or offshore installation.

 

Team Leadership & Mentoring

 

  • Provide technical mentorship to junior engineers and review their work for accuracy and completeness.
  • Lead or participate in design teams, ensuring adherence to project scope and technical requirements.
  • Promote knowledge sharing and contribute to continuous improvement of engineering processes.

 

Standards, QA/QC & Documentation

 

  • Develop and maintain corporate and project-specific standards for static mechanical equipment.
  • Respond to comments and queries from other Hanwha offices, classification societies and clients.
  • Maintain accurate records and ensure documentation meets quality and project control standards.

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (Master’s preferred).
  • Minimum 15 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering, with significant experience in leading complex engineering projects in the offshore oil and gas industry.
  • Prior experience with FPSO or FLNG design development and/or engineering project delivery (e.g. at a top-tier FPSO contractor) will be preferred.
  • Strong background in static equipment engineering (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, tanks).
  • Proven track record of success in developing and performing static equipment conceptual / feasibility studies during pre-FEED/FEED or tender stage.
  • Knowledge of applicable international design codes and standards (ASME Section VIII, API 650/660/661, EN 13445, PED, etc.).
  • Proficiency in engineering software and tools for design, analysis, and simulation of static equipment. (e.g., PV Elite, Compress) and 3D model review tools (e.g., AVEVA E3D, Navisworks).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to develop innovative solutions to complex engineering challenges.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and to build and maintain positive relationships with clients, shipyards, vendors, and other stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver multiple priorities and projects simultaneously, ensuring high-quality outcomes within scope, schedule, and budget.
  • Effective communicator with excellent written and verbal English skills.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate effectively to achieve project and organizational objectives.
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct.
  • Proactive, adaptable, and resilient, with the ability to thrive in a dynamic and challenging work environment.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license, Chartered Engineer, or equivalent certification is advantageous.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations and active participation in industry events and conferences is desirable.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.
