Position Overview
The Lead Weight Control Engineer is responsible for managing and coordinating Topsides Weight Management and Weight Control activities for FPSO/FLNG and offshore projects, under the direction of the Principal Engineer or Discipline Engineering Manager. The role covers weight estimation, tracking, forecasting, reporting, and governance throughout all project phases, ensuring weight targets, center of gravity requirements, and project deliverables are properly controlled and maintained.
The position also supports the Head of Discipline in developing Weight Control practices, maintaining company standards, validating weight data and reports, and mentoring junior engineers. The role works closely with multidisciplinary teams across Korea, the USA, Brazil, Singapore, India, and other locations.
Key Responsibility
- Support the Head of Discipline in developing and maintaining Weight Management procedures, standards, tools, and best practices.
- Maintain topsides weight databases and lessons-learned records from Pre-FEED, FEED, EPCI, and O&M projects.
- Develop and maintain company standards for weight estimating, tracking, forecasting, reporting, and verification.
- Promote Weight Control awareness and ensure consistent implementation across projects.
- Lead structural discipline execution, manage design reviews and interdisciplinary interfaces, and ensure delivery of fit-for-purpose, fabrication-ready structural solutions.
- Develop or review structural deliverables such as design criteria, analysis reports, calculation packages, steel or concrete details, material requisitions, and fabrication support documents.
- Coordinate with naval architecture, layout, piping, mechanical, transportation, lifting, and installation teams to ensure integrated and constructible structural solutions.
- Review structural concepts, loading assumptions, support arrangements, reinforcement strategies, and design changes affecting integrity, fabrication, transportation, installation, and in-service performance.
- Provide guidance on standardization, weight control, constructability, and design-for-fabrication principles across projects.
- Plan and coordinate discipline workload, priorities, and resource requirements to meet project milestones and quality expectations.
- Lead discipline reviews, manage interfaces with clients and vendors, and resolve significant technical issues requiring balanced decisions on risk, schedule, and cost.
- Ensure compliance with applicable codes, company standards, and project requirements, and escalate critical risks or deviations appropriately.
- Mentor engineers or specialists within the discipline and drive continuous improvement through lessons learned and standard work practices.
Qualification
- Bachelor’s degree in Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Naval Architecture, or related discipline; Master’s degree is preferred.
- 15+ years of relevant experience in offshore and/or onshore plant, EPC, oil and gas, energy, or industrial projects.
- Proven experience leading Weight Control programs for FPSO, FLNG, offshore platforms, or similar facilities.
- Strong experience in weight estimation, budgeting, forecasting, center of gravity management, weight databases, and reporting.
- Practical experience in design and drafting deliverables, drawing standards, document control, and multidisciplinary coordination is required.
- Proficiency in structural analysis tools such as SACS, STAAD.Pro, SESAM, ANSYS or equivalent is preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to provide technical governance, make or endorse high-impact decisions, and influence project and business stakeholders on complex technical matters.
- Experience supporting concept, pre-FEED/FEED, detailed engineering, EPC execution, tendering, or operations support for major projects is strongly preferred.
- Fluent English communication skills are preferred; additional language capability is an advantage in multinational project environments.
