Position Overview:

Principal Material Engineer leads and controls material engineering activities for FPSO/FLNG or Offshore facilities.

Principal Material Engineer develops corporate technical standards/procedures, workflow, engineering platform and keep them updated, integral, practical, and fit to purpose with incorporating Project Lesson Learnts.

Principal Material Engineer assist Head of Discipline for managing a corporate organization and mentors Material Engineers in the Discipline.

Principal Material Engineer conducts technical validation and quality assurance (input/output data accuracy, technical appropriateness, consistency, practicality, code, optimum solution, and regulatory compliance), provides technical advice or takes a lead as Project Discipline Lead - Material Engineering in executing Feasibility /Conceptual Study/Pre-FEED/FEED, EPCI Engineering for FPSO/FLNG or Offshore facilities projects.

Principal Material Engineer shall be able to analyze to identify optimal solution and communicate these solutions through technical reports. This role may require frequent travel to the US, Europe, and Asia.

 

The ideal candidate of the position will have a strong background in Offshore Oil & Gas Industry, be an expert in Material Engineering, and provide strategic focus in the Material Engineering for Conceptual/pre-FEED/FEED/EPC(I) projects of FPSO, FLNG or offshore facilities.

 

The strategic focus will also include providing support to Hanwha Ocean engineering teams based at Houston/Seoul/Amsterdam/Singapore and elsewhere as necessary including Conceptual, pre-FEED and FEED for projects in the offshore area in the future.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Corporate, General

  • Develop Corporate Technical Standards and Procedures for Material Engineering (e.g., Material Selection Philosophy, Piping/Valve Material Specification, Surface Preparation and Coating Specification, Color Coding Specification, Sacrificial Anode Specification, ICCS Specification etc.)
  • Develop Topside Engineering Workflow and Engineering Platform
  • Assist Material Head of Discipline to manage corporate organization
  • Update and Maintain EPCI and O & M Phase Lesson Learnt database

 

Proposal/Pre-award Phase

  • Conduct Conceptual/Feasibility Study to propose the optimum & competitive material selection.
  • Ensure all engineering documents are prepared and developed in accordance with relevant design code, standard and client’s project specification.
  • Provide engineering expertise and support to form the optimum and competitive proposals
  • Ensure material selection and specifications are optimized and fit to purpose, environment, and design life. 
  • Provide engineering review and support for bid proposal including estimate of manhour and cost.

 

Feasibility Study/Pre-FEED/FEED/EPCI Phase

  • Take a Project Discipline Lead or Advisor role to manage projects
  • Become a focal point for Material Discipline in Project Team and Communicate with Clients
  • Raise Technical Queries towards the client’s project documents, Design basis to ensure all scope of works and design basis are clarified.
  • Manage interface with all relevant discipline to get necessary information for material engineering or to provide data to other discipline for their engineering
  • Manage Material Discipline Team - manning and schedule control
  • Mentor junior or less-experienced material engineers
  • Attend project meeting internally and externally (with clients, third party, sub-contractor) and generate MOM
  • Report Area of Concerns, Progress and Plan to Project management team and Corporate Head of Discipline
  • Ensure Compliance with regulatory requirements
  • Develop Project Design Philosophies, Standards, Procedure - e.g., Material Selection Philosophy, Piping/Valve Material Specification, Surface Preparation and Coating Specification, Color Coding Specification, Sacrificial Anode Specification, ICCS Specification etc. to fit to each project.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, Pre-FEED, FEED, FEED Verification (Inception of EPCI Phase) and EPCI phase Engineering (Detailed Engineering).
  • Develop Corrosion and Erosion simulation and review the result for adequacy of material selection
  • Develop Material Selection Report and Material Selection Diagrams
  • Close out comment/punches/recommendation from HAZOP, Vendor HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, Design Review etc.
  • Review Vendor Documents - Material Selection and Corrosion Protection
  • Supervise sub-contractor in veiw of design and deliverable quality and project schedule
  • Review sub-contractor's deliverables and Validate design and deliverable technical qualities
  • Implement Management of Change to ensure all design change to be incorporated in as built.
  • Provide engineering support for construction, commissioning, and operation team
  • Provide engineering expertise for decision making to resolve material related issue
  • Ensure as-built process deliverables such as Material Selection Report, Material Selection Diagram etc.

 

Operation & Maintenance Phase

  • Support Operation and Maintenance Team
  • Conduct Troubleshooting and provide optimum technical solution
  • Conduct material selection study for facility modification, revamp studies

 

Qualifications: 

  • Minimum bachelor’s degree or master’s degree in safety engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in the offshore or onshore oil and gas industry
  • Minimum consecutive 7 years’ experience at top-tier FPSO contractor or Offshore/Onshore EPC contractor (minimum 7 years working experience in the same contractor)
  • Minimum 1 FPSO EPCI Project experience from the beginning of project (engineering) until the sail-away to site or delivery of FPSO
  • Minimum 1 FPSO FEED/EPCI Project experience as a Project Lead - Process Safety including FPSO Conceptual / Feasibility Studies
  • Hands-on experience of Technical Safety Studies (HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, Consequence Modeling, QRA)
  • Hands-on Commissioning, Operation and Maintenance experience is value-added.
  • Versed with Process Engineering Tools such as Phast, Safeti, MAROS or equivalent and ability to interpret result of process safety studies and RAM studies
  • Extensive knowledge of offshore safety regulations, standards, and best practices - as well as an understanding of scientific methods of problem-solving.
  • Very strong leadership skills with ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
