Position Overview
The Senior / Lead Mechanical Engineer (Material Handling) in the Topsides Mechanical Equipment Discipline is responsible for providing technical expertise, guidance, and leadership in the field of material handling for complex engineering projects. This role involves developing innovative engineering solutions, ensuring compliance with applicable industry codes and standards, and supporting successful project execution from initial design through final implementation.
Depending on experience and appointment level, the role may also involve leading discipline activities, coordinating engineering resources, overseeing engineering contractors, and serving as the primary technical interface with clients and stakeholders. The Senior / Lead Engineer plays a key role throughout project execution, from initial design to final implementation and acts as a technical interface with client and stakeholders.
Key Responsibility
- Develop, review and issue project material handling philosophies, specifications, datasheets, requisition documents, checklists and reporting templates in accordance with project requirements, client standards and industry best practices.
- Lead or support 30%, 60% and 90% model reviews and ensure material handling requirements are incorporated into the overall facility design.
- Provide MTOs for Material Handling Equipment and review material handling engineering deliverables prepared by engineering subcontractors and equipment suppliers.
- Act as the primary technical interface with clients, vendors, subcontractors and internal stakeholders on all material handling matters.
- Review vendor proposals, attend clarification meetings, prepare technical bid clarifications and Technical Bid Evaluation (TBE) reports, and review and approve vendor data and deliverables.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, progress tracking and package execution activities to support project delivery.
- Lead or support discipline engineering activities, including technical reviews, coordination, resource planning and guidance to engineers and designers where applicable.
- Assist in resolving and troubleshooting technical issues throughout project execution, including fabrication, installation, commissioning and operations phases.
- Respond to technical queries from clients, contractors, suppliers, classification societies and internal departments, and prepare formal responses to comments on specifications, drawings and related documents where applicable.
- Coordinate with fabrication, installation, commissioning and operations teams to ensure smooth project execution and timely resolution of technical issues.
- Ensure all engineering documentation is complete and compliant with project requirements, applicable codes and standards, and quality management systems.
- Prepare progress reports and provide technical support during vendor engagements, including manufacturing facility visits, to assess manufacturing limitations, testing requirements and lead times.
Qualification
- Minimum Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the offshore and onshore oil and gas industry. Candidates with significant discipline leadership and project execution experience may be considered for Lead Engineer appointment.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in Material Handling Engineering within a leading FPSO contractor or Offshore/Onshore EPC contractor.
- Experience in FPSO EPCI projects from engineering through sail-away, commissioning, or final delivery.
- Extensive knowledge of Material Handling, Mechanical Equipment, or Package Engineering practices, principles, industry codes, and standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead or coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities and manage interfaces with clients, vendors, subcontractors, and project stakeholders.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
- Fluent in English, both oral and written.
