Position Overview:
The Senior Piping Engineer is responsible for leading and managing piping engineering activities for topside facilities in FPSO, FLNG, and offshore projects. This includes developing corporate technical standards, procedures, workflows, and engineering platforms (e.g., piping design data integration), ensuring they remain updated, practical, and fit-for-purpose while incorporating project lessons learned.
The Senior Piping Engineer supports the Head of Discipline in managing the corporate organization and mentors piping engineers within the discipline. The role involves technical validation and quality assurance of engineering data and deliverables, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and optimal solutions throughout feasibility, conceptual, pre-FEED, FEED, and EPCI engineering phases.
This position requires strong analytical skills to identify optimal solutions and communicate findings through technical reports. Travel to the US, Europe, and Asia may be required. The ideal candidate will have significant offshore oil and gas experience, expertise in topside piping engineering, and the ability to provide strategic focus for conceptual, pre-FEED, FEED, and EPC(I) projects. The role also supports Hanwha Ocean engineering teams in the USA, Netherlands, Singapore, India, and other locations as needed.
Key Responsibilities:
Corporate and General
- Develop corporate technical standards and procedures for topside piping.
- Develop workflows and engineering platforms for piping design.
- Support the Head of Discipline in managing the corporate organization.
- Update and maintain the EPCI and O&M phase lessons learned database.
Proposal and Pre-Award Phase
- Conduct conceptual and feasibility studies to propose optimum and competitive solutions.
- Ensure engineering documents comply with relevant design codes, standards, and client specifications.
- Provide technical expertise and support in preparing competitive proposals.
- Ensure piping and utility systems are optimized, efficient, safe, and environmentally compliant.
- Review proposals and provide input on manhour and cost estimates.
Feasibility Study / Pre-FEED / FEED / EPCI Phase
- Act as focal point for topside piping discipline within the project team and liaise with clients.
- Raise technical queries on client project documents and design basis to ensure scope clarity.
- Coordinate with other disciplines to exchange necessary engineering data.
- Manage the piping engineering team, including manning and schedule control.
- Mentor junior and less experienced piping engineers.
- Attend internal and external project meetings (clients, third parties, subcontractors) and prepare minutes.
- Report concerns, progress, and plans to project management and Corporate Head of Discipline.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Develop project design philosophies, standards, and procedures.
- Conduct feasibility studies, pre-FEED, FEED, FEED verification, and EPCI phase engineering.
- Develop piping calculations, studies, and deliverables (layouts, routing, stress analysis, material specifications, and procurement packages).
- Participate in workshops (material handling, 3D model reviews, constructability studies).
- Close out comments and recommendations from HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, vendor HAZOPs, 3D model reviews, and constructability reviews.
- Review vendor piping deliverables (P&IDs, datasheets, layouts, routing).
- Manage third-party consultant scopes (e.g., frequency-induced vibration (FIV), acoustic-induced vibration (AIV) studies).
- Review, comment, and approve third-party deliverables.
- Supervise subcontractors to ensure quality of design, deliverables, and schedule adherence.
- Review and validate subcontractor deliverables for technical quality.
- Implement Management of Change to ensure design updates are incorporated in as-built documentation.
- Provide engineering support to construction, commissioning, and operations teams.
- Provide technical expertise to resolve piping-related issues.
- Ensure accuracy and completeness of as-built piping deliverables.
Operation and Maintenance Phase
- Support operations and maintenance teams.
- Conduct troubleshooting and propose optimum technical solutions.
- Perform piping engineering for facility modifications and revamps.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in piping or relevant engineering discipline.
- Minimum 10 years of experience in the offshore or onshore oil and gas industry.
- At least 5 consecutive years with a top-tier FPSO or offshore/onshore EPC contractor.
- Minimum 1 FPSO EPCI project completed from engineering through sail-away or delivery.
- Proven piping engineering experience in FPSO or offshore EPCI projects, including design basis, topside layouts, routing, stress analysis, material specifications, procurement engineering, and supervision of detailed engineering or subcontractors.
- Field engineering experience during construction is an advantage.
- Proficiency with piping engineering tools such as CAESAR II.
- Extensive knowledge of piping engineering practices, principles, industry codes, and standards, with strong problem-solving methodology.
- Strong leadership skills with ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy, with ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong communication skills in English, both written and spoken, with ability to work effectively with co-workers, vendors, and clients.
